How to tell what your system uses

Go to the outdoor condenser and find the data plate — a metal or foil label, usually on the back or side of the cabinet, listing the model number, serial number, and electrical specs. Not every R-22 repair is a mistake:

  • Electrical parts. A capacitor or contactor ($150–$400) doesn’t involve refrigerant. On a system that’s otherwise running and holding its charge, replacing one to get through a season while you plan the replacement is reasonable.
  • A fan motor ($300–$700) on a system with a healthy compressor and no leak — same logic, weaker.
  • A very small top-off on a slow leak, if — and only if — you’ve already scheduled the replacement for the fall and need to get through August. Go in with eyes open: that money is gone.

Anything involving the coil, the compressor, or a significant refrigerant charge is a replacement conversation.

Drop-in replacements: the honest read

There are refrigerant blends marketed as “R-22 replacements” that can be charged into an existing system after the R-22 is recovered. They work, in the sense that the system cools. The trade-offs: capacity and efficiency typically drop, mineral oil compatibility varies by blend, some require the system’s metering device to be adjusted, and the original manufacturer generally won’t warrant the conversion.
